In response to a recent incident where a power bank exploded on a Hong Kong Airlines flight, forcing an emergency landing, two of Vietnam’s leading airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, have implemented a new ban on the use of power banks during flights.
Precautionary Measures
This precautionary measure is part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger safety and reduce the risk of fire hazards associated with lithium batteries.
Under the new regulations, passengers are strictly prohibited from using power banks while onboard. Although they are still allowed to carry power banks in their hand luggage, they must adhere to specific safety guidelines to prevent potential accidents.
Power banks cannot be used to charge electronic devices during flights and must remain switched off and securely stored at all times. Additionally, carrying power banks in checked luggage is strictly forbidden due to the risk of overheating and combustion.
Being Aware Of Capacity Limits
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air have also placed limitations on the number and capacity of power banks that passengers can bring:
- Passengers may carry up to 10 power banks with a capacity of 100Wh or less.
- For power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh, only two devices are permitted.
- Charging power banks using the aircraft’s USB ports is strictly prohibited.
These prohibitions are consistent with worldwide safety standards, since other airlines, like Thai Airways, AirAsia, and Air Busan, have imposed similar bans to reduce the risks connected to lithium battery fires.
